Discourse – Ebola poster Samba Cisse 2014

This unicef supported poster was designed by Samba Cisse in 2014 to help fight the Ebola outbreaks in Sierra Leone. With Literacy rates being low in Sierra Leone it became key to find a way of communicating symptoms and action in a way that meant even illiterate people could understand. Cisse successfully did this by creating clear illustrations showing the symptoms of ebola then a character calling a number. This simple wordless style was adopted by mainly organisations in the region in order to fight the condition with great success

This poster shows exactly how information design can be utilised to help lower literacy rates survive and stay informed when more conventional posters would have failed. By combining design and illustration this method has saved many lives and possibly could be attributed to helping stop the Ebola virus
